In English for Care Workers, participants will build and strengthen the English language skills needed in their everyday professional life. The focus is on clear, respectful communication with patients and families as well as clear and correct documentation and smooth coordination within the team. The content, pace, and focus are individually tailored to the specific interests & needs of participants, as well as their current English level.
This course is suitable for care and nursing workers in clinics, hospitals, aged care, rehabilitation, palliative care and other in- and out-patient settings and as well as disability and childcare settings.
Communication on the job as a care worker
- Conduct admission, consultation and information sessions clearly and with empathy
- Communicate with family members clearly and with understanding and care
- Manage handovers, emergencies and team co-ordination with confidence
Documentation & other written communication
- Write structured medical histories
- Produce professional standard nursing reports, patient histories and accident reports
- Complete daily progress and treatment records efficiently and precisely, take part in shift handovers with confidence
- Write professional and informative emails to colleagues, superiors and doctors
Talk about care and nursing procedures and processes
- Explain the correct administration, dosage, effects and side-effects of medication
- Talk clearly about symptoms, treatments and care needs of patients
- Explain operations and other medical procedures in a clear and accessible way
- Talk clearly about vaccinations, preventative care and other health care plans
- Learn and use key phrases to do with patient self-care, resilience and agency
Intercultural competence and familiarity with health systems
- Become active & skilled in communicating in an intercultural team
- Understand differences in health care and aged/disability care systems between countries
